So far, the only thing that has worked was a change in PCI config (right now a setup that works is the first option, full speed for the graphics card, 8 speed for the last slot). It is the irregular nature of the problem that makes it hard to get a starting point. Man, I have done pro tech support on Digi/Apple systems in the Benelux ever since early Nubus days.
Digi are there any other tests you want me to perform? DIGI : is there data known as to how much current/power the cards draw and whether the values are different upon startup versus normal operating condition?
Might be a wild goose chase, but worth considering. I try to see whether the startup electrical power/tension needed with certain types of cards installed could be too much for the current power supply, thus not delivering enough power to boot up. Later I am gonna try and do some measurements as to how much electrical power/tension is taken upon booting versus normal operation. > Cards tested were: - Sonnet E4p eSATA host card, second ATI 1900x graphics card I did not have boot problems with other cards the boot behaviour only seems to appear with Digi Core and HD Accel cards. I will make sreenshots of all diffrent configs and try to post them somewhere. The Apple tech tried to blame me when my customer phoned him. erratical behaviour during sessions, strange freezes etc. the customer was thinking I tried to give him a bad Mac or sompin.Īnd Apple tech suggested it was a RAM issue, but I knew it couldn't be, cause it uses Apple approved RAM, and if the RAM would have been bad, there would have been operational problems too, i.e. saved me headaches and a blame on my rep.
This afternoon I will install a HD2 in the said system and run some tests. I know the config was different before, but I don't remember what setting was used. The config it is running now is the first choice, with 16x for the graphics card (a ATI 1900x) and 8x for the last slot (to feed the eSATA card). I changed the PCIe configuration because I installed a PCIe eSATA host card (Sonnet E4P). His old machine doesn't show the startup behaviour in my shop. I went as far as giving him a totally new MacPro to keep him happy. This problem caused me quite some headaches, since it was on a customer's machine. Ok, finally I was able to remedy this mess.
